Kate Cochrane 2020

Artist’s Statement

I am at my happiest drawing and painting and do so  in my  studio in the garden.  Working as a colourist I use elements of the landscape: trees, rocks, ruins and reflections in water using layers of paint and glazing.  I work in a variety of media including oils, acrylics, gouache, oil and dry pastels. The enjoyment for me is in the process of creating paintings, often combined with a struggle to express feelings about the subject, resulting in a rich tapestry of colour and texture. My hope is for the viewer to sense the passion, joy and vitality of the paintings. Currently I am exploring illustrations for traditional stories, and continuing a large commission to go to Canberra.

Paintings have been shown at the Royal West of England Academy, The Mall, Bath Society of Arts Open, and Southampton Art Gallery. I regularly exhibit with the First View Gallery, Stourhead.

I am a member of  the Black Swan Guild under the umbrella of the Black Swan Arts, Frome, and am currently chair of the founding group.  I belong to the Artists 303 – a group loosely based around the A303. For 2020 I am the Event Co-coordinator for the Frome Open Art Trail.

I gained a Diploma in Graphic Design at Canterbury College of Art followed by local courses in Fine Art and in colour work. I’ve exhibited paintings since 1980, designed home accessories, and recently been  running workshops and Art Demos to local Art groups.
